AI Revolution Unleashed: 2025 Smart City Summit & Expo to Redefine Global Industries

The future of urban living is here, and it’s powered by artificial intelligence. The 12th Smart City Summit & Expo (SCSE) is poised to be a landmark event, showcasing groundbreaking AI-driven innovations that will reshape industries worldwide. Scheduled for March 18-21, 2025, at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, Hall 2, this premier Asia-Pacific exhibition will focus on “Digital and Green Transformation,” a theme that underscores the critical role of AI in driving smart governance, energy efficiency, and sustainable development.

This year’s SCSE, organized by the National Development Council, Kaohsiung City Government, and Taipei Computer Association (TCA), with the Taipei City Government rejoining as a co-organizer, will span two venues: Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center and the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center (March 20-22). The dual-location approach signifies the growing importance and scale of this event, attracting a record-breaking international audience.

Alex C.C. Chien, Chairman of the Taiwan Smart City Solutions Alliance, highlights the pivotal role of AI in today’s global landscape. “As global AI competition intensifies, AI applications are fundamentally altering industries,” Chien states. “By harnessing the power of edge AI and generative AI, we are driving innovation across smart transportation, healthcare, building, and energy management.”

Leading industry giants, including Acer Group, ASUS, Chunghwa Telecom, Far EasTone, Foxconn, MiTAC, SECOM, SYSCOM Group, Tatung, Taiwan Mobile, TECO, and Quanta, will showcase their latest AI-powered solutions, propelling Taiwan’s digital transformation forward. The 12th Smart City Innovative Application Awards will further highlight Taiwan’s achievements in smart city development through collaborative efforts between the public, private, and academic sectors.

This year’s SCSE has achieved an unprecedented level of international participation, with representatives from 59 countries and regions, 138 cities, and 2,806 overseas visitors – a remarkable 28% increase from the previous year. Notably, 569 mayors and representatives will attend, fostering global collaboration. The top five visiting countries and regions include Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan, and Hungary, demonstrating the event’s widespread appeal.

A significant highlight is the delegation of over ten Ukrainian city leaders, who will explore how smart technologies can aid in Ukraine’s reconstruction. Special events, such as the “Ukraine Recovery and Reconstruction Business Opportunities Forum” and international matchmaking sessions, will facilitate knowledge exchange and cooperation.

The inaugural “Smart City Global Co-Creation Pavilion” will promote collaboration between Taiwanese and international enterprises, integrating smart city solutions for global markets. Chunghwa Telecom, in partnership with overseas telecom leaders like Japan’s NTT, Singapore’s Singtel, Thailand’s AIS, and the IOWN Global Forum, will showcase cutting-edge technologies, including all-optical networks, smart streetlights, and comprehensive smart city applications. System Integration Award winners, such as SYSCOM Group and Wave-In, will present their successful international projects.

Cynthia Chen, Secretary-General of the Taiwan Smart City Solutions Alliance (TSSA), emphasizes the importance of addressing Taiwan’s energy challenges. With the decommissioning of Nuclear Power Plant No. 3, Taiwan is transitioning to a nuclear-free future, increasing its reliance on renewable energy. Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) are crucial for ensuring grid stability by integrating distributed energy resources. The VPP Pavilion will feature key TSSA members, including Billion Watts, Chunghwa System Integration, Delta Electronics, e-Formula Technologies, Intelligent Cloud Plus, National Central University, Seetel, Tatung, WeatherRisk, and YFY. The alliance will also host the “Taiwan Virtual Power Plant Development Trends and Business Opportunities Forum” to discuss strategies for expanding VPP deployment.

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications will present the “Low-Carbon Mobility Pavilion,” showcasing the future of smart transportation. The Taiwan EV Power Supplement Alliance will highlight smart charging station standards and applications. Companies like Foxconn and Master Bus will display their latest electric buses, demonstrating the potential synergy between large batteries and virtual power grids, creating new business opportunities for electric bus operators. The “Smart Startups Program” will feature 115 startups from 11 accelerators worldwide, showcasing innovations in smart technology and green sustainability.

In a push towards net-zero emissions, the inaugural “Urban Energy Transition Award” will recognize the energy efficiency, renewable energy usage, and resource recycling efforts of 22 counties and cities. Pingtung County and Kaohsiung City will be awarded for “Energy Transition,” while Kinmen County and Taipei City will be recognized for “Circular Resource Promotion.” These winning local governments will showcase their achievements during the exhibition.

Chen concludes, “Taiwan’s smart city development has reached a new milestone. Through AI technology applications, international co-creation, deep energy conservation, and VPP development, Taiwan is accelerating urban digital and net-zero transformations. This exhibition not only demonstrates Taiwan’s innovative technologies but also provides a platform for international cooperation and knowledge exchange.”
